Summary
General Sir William Butler served as commander-in-chief at the Cape in 1898-99 and sent home prophetic warnings that the Uitlander agitation was manufactured by the mining magnates. Recalled for his outspokenness before the war began, his autobiography is an important dissenting voice from within the British military establishment, arguing against both the war and the influence of Rhodes and Milner.
