Travels in South Africa: Undertaken at the Request of the Missionary Society

John Campbell, 1815

Summary

Missionary Society director John Campbell undertook journeys into the South African interior, his first in 1813 taking him to the Griqua settlement at Klaarwater (later Griquatown) and into early Tswana territories. This provides the first published accounts of Griqua society and the northern interior — an important source for the early history of the Griqua people.
