Historian J.A. Froude visited South Africa in 1874 at the height of the confederation debate and produced this influential work arguing for closer ties between Britain and her colonies. His chapters on the Cape and Boer republics illuminate the political debates of the 1870s and 1880s, and his frank admiration for Boer settlers made the book significant in its day.
