Robert Moffat made four journeys to the Ndebele (Matabele) kingdom of Mzilikazi, beginning in 1829, developing an extraordinary friendship with the king. These edited journals are the primary source for the Ndebele kingdom in its early phase north of the Vaal River and after its migration to Zimbabwe — an unparalleled record of Ndebele society before significant European intrusion.
