A Narrative of Four Journeys into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffraria

William Paterson, 1789

Summary

Scottish botanist William Paterson made four journeys from the Cape between 1777 and 1779, reaching further than most European travellers of his era. His account is one of the earliest descriptions of Xhosa society and the eastern frontier region, and an important source for Khoikhoi communities of the Karoo.
